About Nelnet Renewable Energy

Scott Gubbels is President of Nelnet Renewable Energy and Executive Director of Corporate Tax at Nelnet. Scott worked as a certified public accountant before joining Nelnet to lead their corporate tax department when the company went public in 2003. He has managed all tax considerations for more nearly 60 acquisitions, and his team has created significant, tangible value through tax planning, compliance, and controversy defense. Beginning in 2018, Scott started and continues to lead Nelnet’s Renewable Energy group and its various divisions. This group’s vision is “powering the dreams of the next generation.” This segment includes the investment in solar tax equity funding and portfolio management in excess of $600 million; a growing co-investor platform; a solar engineering, procurement, and construction company with eight offices focused on commercial installation; and CleanTech innovation.

Jim Kruger is Nelnet’s Chief Financial Officer, a role in which he is responsible for corporate accounting and tax, financial reporting, investor relations, and people services. Kruger is also responsible for all aspects of Nelnet Renewable Energy business including construction and development activities. Previously, Kruger served as the company’s Controller from 1998-2013, where he was responsible for, among other things, the company’s accounting activities, financial statement preparation, and SEC compliance reporting. Before coming to Nelnet, Kruger worked as Senior Manager at KPMG Peat Marwick from 1986-1994, before moving to NEBHELP, which was acquired by Nelnet in 1998. Kruger received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln in 1986. He is a CPA in the State of Nebraska, and previously served on the Norris School Board of Education.

Alyssa is Managing Director of NRE Operations, where she supports legal, compliance, incentives, communications, culture, and strategic initiatives teams. She graduated with honors from Harvard Law School in 2014 and previously served in Washington, DC as one of the founding members of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Prior to joining Nelnet, she served as a legal/policy advisor to Lincoln, Neb. Mayor Gaylor Baird on economic development and resiliency. Alyssa joined Nelnet Renewable Energy as legal counsel in 2020. In that capacity, Alyssa has helped close many tax equity transactions for Nelnet and its co-investors, oversee the acquisition of solar construction company GRNE Solar, and establish contract templates and standard operating procedures for the solar construction, development, financing, and other organizational business lines.

Chad is the Chief Financial Officer of Nelnet Renewable Energy. He began his professional career as a certified public accountant working in public accounting for six years, including four years at two of the Big 4. He then spent over 17 years with HDR, one of the nation’s largest engineering, architecture, and construction companies, serving as their Treasurer and Corporate Controller. After leaving HDR, Chad diversified his experience by working as a CFO for a national coffee franchisor garnering experience in franchising, private equity, and vertically integrated supply chains, and then as the CFO for a national credit reporting agency garnering experience in risk management, credit reporting, and lending. Chad is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a BS in Accounting and enjoys golf, his family, and following his favorite but frustrating teams of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Las Vegas Raiders.
